Chapter 3
When I came to, Dylan and Jade were both holding my hands and standing at my bedside, their faces filled with worry.
My mind was a whirlwind. On one side, I had my best friend and the man I loved, and on the other, that phone call from the future kept echoing in my head.
"Who am I supposed to trust?"
Dylan saw the paleness of my face and was the first to speak.
"Amelia, the smoke was so thick during the fire that I couldn't see anyone's face. I heard a voice and thought it was you, and that was why I grabbed her and got her out. Once I realized it wasn't you, I tried to come back, but I passed out before I could reach the hall."
Jade squeezed my hand gently, flashing a smile. "I got lucky because of you, Amelia. You're not mad, are you?"
I forced a smile, stiff and unnatural. "Of course not."
But Dylan had called out Jade's name as he left. I heard it.
"Why is he lying to me?"
I closed my eyes, rubbing my temples.
"Amelia, are you feeling tired?" Dylan asked, noticing my gesture, his voice filled with concern. "The doctor said you inhaled a lot of smoke. You should rest."
"Yeah, Amelia, we'll let you get some sleep. I'll come back to check on you later," Jade chimed in, echoing his words. They both left the room, one after the other.
Just as the door clicked shut, my phone rang.
Seeing that it was another call from my future self, I answered immediately.
"Do you believe me now?" her voice asked from the other end.
I stared at the thick bandages wrapped around my legs, the words caught in my throat.
She sighed softly, as if she could hear my silence.
My hands clenched into fists as I croaked, "If I marry Dylan, will my life really be that miserable?"
"Trust me, miserable can't even describe."
Those words made my heart pound painfully in my chest.
It took me a long moment to steady myself before whispering, "I get it."
After hanging up, I knew I had to talk to Dylan. I needed the truth.
Ignoring the sharp pain in my legs, I limped out of my hospital room, determined.
I hadn't gone far when I reached for my phone to call Dylan, but before I could dial, something stopped me—soft, intimate whispers from just down the hall.
My heart sank.
I turned slowly, following the sound to a room with a door left slightly ajar. Inside, I saw two familiar figures tangled together.
It was Dylan and Jade.
"Did you miss me, kitten?"
Dylan's voice was low and eager, as he kissed Jade passionately.
Jade chuckled softly. "Your fiancée is lying in a hospital bed, and here you are, sneaking around with me. Isn't that a bit too cold-hearted, Dylan?"
He laughed, dismissive. "You're the one I love. Amelia's just someone I have to marry to keep my family off my back.
"You're the only one who makes me feel this good."
The words coming from Dylan's mouth felt like a punch to the gut. He sounded like a stranger to me.
"So it's true. I really am just a stand-in. The one he loves most has always been Jade."
The weight of it all crashed down on me, making it hard to breathe.
I wanted to laugh, to brush it off, but my heart felt like it was being crushed by an iron fist. There was no room for laughter—only pain.
Their whispers grew louder, turning into groans and shameless moans.
I couldn't bear it anymore.
The future version of me had warned me—my life with Dylan would be a nightmare.
"I have to stop this." I grabbed my phone and dialed the future me.
"Hey, I want to change everything. Can you help me?"
