Chapter 3
Things between Gerard and me weren't always this bad.
Before my senior year of high school, I was the center of his world.
Even his phone and laptop passwords were my birthday.
However, everything changed when my maid's daughter, Veronica, transferred into our class.
Two weeks after she arrived, I fell down the stairs one morning and broke my leg.
At the time, I was preparing for a major ballet competition.
Since I was injured, Veronica stepped in to take my place.
That was when I found out she had also trained in ballet—and she was good.
Really good, according to Gerard.
While I was stuck at home recovering, Veronica became Gerard's new deskmate.
He made sure of it himself.
It happened after he found her crying in the bathroom, being "bullied" by some of my close friends. Naturally, he came to her rescue.
From that moment on, Gerard was her knight in shining armor.
I became the villain in their love story, the petty, jealous girlfriend who just couldn't let go.
Back then, I refused to accept that Veronica had stolen Gerard from me. I did so many childish things out of jealousy.
When Veronica framed me, I didn't even think to gather evidence to clear my name. Instead, I just spiraled, and Gerard started to hate me more and more.
In the end, he blocked me on everything and told both of our families that he would never marry me.
His heart belonged to Veronica and only her.
I was devastated, spiraling into depression. As a result, I left to study abroad for four years just to escape the pain.
But when I returned home, I found out Veronica had left the country, too.
Gerard was heartbroken and miserable, so I stayed by his side, trying to help him get back on his feet.
While comforting him, I encouraged him to follow his dreams.
He decided to become a pilot—because Veronica loved to dance, and being a pilot meant he could personally fly her to all her competitions.
I had planned to finally let him go.
But the night he and Veronica had a huge fight and broke up, Gerard got drunk and slept with me.
Afterward, he shoved the test report of the wine in my face, accusing me of being a manipulative liar.
He claimed I had drugged him that night, though I had no idea who actually did it.
To make things worse, I ended up pregnant.
Under pressure from his parents, Gerard reluctantly proposed to me.
During that time, Veronica came back to the country, and Gerard practically lived at her place, barely coming home.
Driven mad with jealousy, the old me had bought a ticket for the same flight as Veronica just to catch them in the act.
At the last minute, I had pulled out a contract his father and I had signed, proving that if I died, Gerard wouldn't inherit a cent.
That was the only reason he had agreed to give me the life vest.
I never imagined that Gerard had never loved me—or the baby I was carrying.
But in this life, I knew better.
So, it was time to cut my losses.
